We’re joined by DUMP co-organiser/curator and Body Language Resident ābnamā, with a recording of her sexy live set from the last Body Language party. With a diverse genre-bending sound, ābnamā has become a staple in the Berlin queer underground.
First and foremost thank you so much for taking the time to put this mix together, can you tell us a little bit about the energy behind this mix, is there anything you would prescribe doing while listening?
I like to have a loose visual reference or a fantasy frame when packing for a set. I knew I’m playing indoors as it gets dark after a long day of people dancing outside in the sun. I wanted something that’s like a wormhole, seductive and slick but at the same disorienting in terms of era or mood, a bit like a cyberpunk lezzie erotic thriller.
You’re a long-standing co-curator or keeper of the pearly gates at DUMP, can you tell us a little bit about the party and who have been on your favourite line-ups so far?
DUMP has been on and off going on for almost a decade now. It started a few years before I joined as a trans takeover of gay darkrooms and it slowly grew into a club night, with the dark room still playing a big part and more often than not spilling out onto the dancefloor. At the last party we had the pleasure of having Lealucifer who played a lightning hot breaky and bassy set and my dearest DIAMIN who’s probably my favorite DJ atm.
How would you describe your sound when digging for music and what influences it?
I’d rather not dig for “my sound” unless I'm filling out gaps for a mix or a specific set. Usually I fixate on an era or a scene and explore for a while but I have my affinities to certain sounds that guide me. I love dubby sounds, captivating basslines, tight machiney grooves, romantic synthlines, unintentional camp etc.
I also love digging at shops and I think that always opens new doors because you encounter other people’s taste, from the people running the shop to whoever’s record collection ended up landing there.
Last and not least, what’s coming up you’re looking forward to?
This weekend I’m playing b2b with Source:Link (MDSM) at the Maricxs Dyke March special with a stunning lineup in Berlin which I’ve been really looking forward to. I’m also excited for Whole Festival and playing b2b with Stella Zekri for the Body Language takeover. Later in the year if everything works out a couple of exciting trips outside Europe are in the plans.
