Jodie Overland strays from her archetypal acid-drenched productions into more of an ambient trip for our 6th mix instalment of Hue and Saturation. We catch up with her as she heads off on her first Euro zone tour.
This mix is definitely a contrast to your usual industrial techno and break driven sets - can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the mix? Is it a reflection of past landscapes you delved into or want to experiment delving into more?
This mix is made of music I like to listen to at home. Aptly called “Music To Clean Your Room To” because there’s something nice about organizing my space while ambient music plays in the background.
I’ve made quite a few ambient songs, never released any though. Those songs are more for my enjoyment right now. Maybe I’ll put them out someday. Ambient music remains something personal to me. Props to Terekke, James Concklin & Thomas P. Heckman for making some of my favourite ambient music.
You’ve just released two absolutely banging EPs this year, one almost literally a month after the other. The Colossal Book of Mathematics is 5 track journey of scintillating hard and fast bass-driven, acid techno while Forever in Transit in April (out on on Violet’s Naive) features a mix of more dynamic experiments in acid. Do you feel a gravitation more towards one or the other in hindsight?
I’m happy to have released them. It took about a year for everything to be finalized, as vinyl releases seem to go. I felt a weight off my shoulders once I let the music out. It’s interesting having something completed and basically waiting what feels like eternity for it to be released into the world. I felt some anxiety for a while before the releases came out. It was just built up energy, I think.
I don’t necessarily love one more than the other. They both came from a place of learning and excitement. Every release is going to have it’s own path and it’s own mark. I think the rawness of Forever in Transit and the hardness of Colossal Book of Mathematics are what make them they’re own unique releases.
What were some of the earliest influences for your sound? Any producers or compilations that you love/really made a mark in particular? Any local artists from the scene in Vancouver you want to shout-out?
My earliest influence for my obsession with acid techno came from Universal Indicator. Particularly the Green album. There’s a mixture of ambient as well as intense driving acid techno that makes it so special. It’s hard to describe just how syncopated and complicated that album is, I get lost every time I listen to it. I also love Hardfloor, I mean who doesn’t.

DJ Pierre, Woody Mcbride, Mike Dearborn, Tin Man, Miss Kittin. There’s too many to name.
There are so many talented producers in Vancouver it’s almost hard to name them all. Big love to Yu Su, Ryan Eno, Minimal Violence, 1800 Haight Street, JS Aurelius, Venetta, and so many more.
Are there any other projects are you working on currently this year or have planned for the future? Where can we catch you spinning?
I’ve got a 7 track psy-trance inspired tape coming out on DJ Speedsick’s label Snake Eyes and Sevens sometime this year, as well as a 5 track EP coming out on NYC based Sweat Equity. Also a remix or two. Might put out a self-released minimal techno EP if I’ve got time, haha. I’ll be touring a lot this year, so far Berlin and Barcelona in May, Bass Coast Festival in July, and New York in September.
On the side of spinning and producing fire, you’re also a bangin’ hair-dresser - are your cuts inspired by your breaks or are your breaks inspired by your cuts?
Haha, I love doing hair. I’m lucky that I have two creative jobs. It doesn’t feel like work, which is nice, and I get to chill with my friends and make them feel good. I’d say the breaks should stay in music because breaks in hair means it’s been fried, heh.
